Knowledge Transfer
It's About
Information
Gardening
is an information-intensive pursuit. You have to
know what to plant, what can grow together, when
it should be planted, how it should be managed and
how it should be harvested. Who has this information?
Seniors, naturally!
|
|
Our
Program
Sponsor
Maple
Ridge Community Foundation provided us with a $1,000
grant for 2008.
|
But Also
Exercise
Gardening
is also a relatively rigorous physical activity. What
better pairing then, than youths
and seniors, the brawn and brains of a perfect partnership.

|
Our Program
Our Organic
Youth program hires highschool-aged youths to work
with senior volunteers to prepare community gardens
and grow organic food for distribution to food agencies.
The youths work 4-hours per week under the direction
of a volunteer.
We are
presently have 1,000 square feet at the Pioneer Park
Organic Community Garden and 100 square feet at the
CEED Centre Organic Community Garden under cultivation
for this program. |
Who Benefits
Food banks,
community kitchens and soup kitchens get our fresh
organic produce. A portion will also be sold through
the Haney Farmers Market to support the market and
teach the youths about marketing and distribution
in a social enterprise. Our volunteers get the satisfaction
of working with the soil and enthusiastic youth.
The youth learn about preparing the soil, growing
produce, harvesting food and all the processes in
a social enterprise.

How to
Get Involved
We hope
to grow this program in future years. Seniors can
volunteer
and youths
can apply for positions. If you have land that is
idle, we would love to discuss
the potential for an Organic Youth garden.
