Chemical Remedies

Pyrethrum

Examples:

Schultz's Instant, Safer Yard & Garden Insect Killer (also contains soap).

Effective Against:

Most garden insects -- see label for specific list.

Crops:

Many vegetables and flower plantings.

Counteracts these pest(s):

Harmful insects and other pests

When To Use:

Use only if non-chemical means are not effective and the damage is more than aesthetic. For soft-bodied insects such as aphids, a water spray or insecticidal soap are less toxic controls.

How To Use:

Read the label. Mix as directed and apply as spray to insects or affected foliage, being careful to direct spray only where needed. Take all label-specified precautions. Wear gloves and eye protection, and avoid breathing any of the spray. Don't mix more pesticide than you will need. Remainder must not be disposed of in trash or poured down the drain; it must be used up or collected as hazardous waste.

Benefits:

Rapidly degraded by sunlight into harmless materials. Derived from natural plant materials.

Concerns:

Toxic to all insects, including beneficial species. Highly toxic to fish until degraded; do not apply near water. Rapid degradation may mean that repeat applications will be necessary in some cases. Inert ingredients in some formulations (not those listed above) may be toxic or highly flammable.
