Common Plant Pests

Cranefly

(also known as Leatherjackets)

For the average lawn, crane flies are rarely a problem.

Characteristics

Adult crane flies look like large mosquitoes with long legs. They don't bite or sting, and are harmless to humans and pets. The adult crane fly can be found around lawns in August and September. The adult does not feed on the lawn.

The eggs hatch in the fall, producing small grayish-brown wormlike larvae. Larvae feed on grass roots in fall, go dormant in winter, and begin feeding again in spring. They develop a tough skin and are often called leatherjackets. Early spring is the best time to monitor for and control crane flies.
