Tent caterpillar

Characteristics:

These long-haired caterpillars build gauzy nests in the forks of tree branches. They feed on leaves outside their nests during the day.

Adults are hairy, medium-size, day-flying moths, usually dull brown or gray. Caterpillars overwinter in egg masses, which often encircle branches and twigs.
